Industry applications

IPG tape industries — construction, HVAC, electrical, and packaging environments

Each sector below lists the performance checks our application desk runs before recommending duct, foil, masking, filament, or water-activated constructions.

Sector map

Six environments where adhesion chemistry has to earn its place

We do not treat “construction tape” as a single SKU. Crews care about substrate chemistry, inspector language, and whether rolls survive a week in a hot connex box.

Commercial Construction

Sheathing, temporary protection, and paint masking on steel and gypsum with documented dimensional stability for multi-week schedules.

HVAC & Mechanical

Foil tape sealing where Class A fire resistance rating pathways and peel adhesion on galvanized seams are non-negotiable.

Electrical & Utilities

Electrical and filament tapes for bundling and abrasion resistance in risers and outdoor pull boxes.

Drywall & Insulation

Joint and vapor-control interfaces that respect moisture vapor transmission targets without trapping condensation against cold walls.

Roofing & Weatherproofing

High-tack sealing around penetrations facing UV stability and water absorption rate stress during staged roof dry-ins.

Industrial Packaging

Water-activated and packing tapes sized for line speed, recycled content percentage goals, and carton board variability.

Requirement checklist by industry lane

Use this matrix when writing Division 07 / 09 / 23 notes. Values illustrate typical IPG evaluation ranges; final SKUs are confirmed against your mock-up substrate.

Requirement HVAC sealing Paint masking Packaging close
Primary concern Fire resistance rating + foil adhesion Clean release + dimensional stability Line speed + fiber tear
Typical service temperature -20°F to 250°F depending on grade Ambient to 250°F bake cycles Warehouse ambient to 120°F trailers
Documentation pack UL / ASTM E84 Class A notes VOC emissions + transfer risk notes Recycled content percentage + FDA food-adjacent notes when required
Common failure mode we design against Edge lift on oily galvanized seams Ghosting after high-temp cure Pop-opens on recycled board
Service life expectancy context Permanent seam systems aligned to duct life Process aid removed after cure Transit cycle measured in days to weeks

Industry dispute we will not blur: cloth duct tape is a strong temporary holder, but it is not a silent substitute for foil constructions when permanent HVAC seams need Class A fire resistance rating language and peel adhesion evidence. Budget pragmatism still matters—sample first, then buy the SKU that survives the mock-up—yet green-building and IAQ packages that already paid for low VOC emissions should not erase those seam requirements to shave a few dollars per roll. On several 2024 Midwest hospital packages, that cloth-versus-foil clarity prevented mid-inspection rework loops without forcing every temporary weather wrap onto a premium foil grade.
